The betrayal of Judas
What would have happened without the betrayal of Judas? Would Christianity have been so widely spread without the martyrdom of Jesus? In his book The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, José Saramago answers this question. In this novel, Judas is the accomplisher of God's mission: to enlarge His Kingdom.
Judas as a mirror for us
For me, Judas is also fascinating for another reason. Of all the twelve apostles, he is the one who is perhaps most like us. He shows us the weakness of a man, driven by greed, who is prepared to commit treason. Curiously, after the betrayal and his subsequent suicide, Judas was replaced as apostle by Mattias. Not only to ease the discomfort over his actions, but also to restore the symmetry of the sculpture gallery.
It is the traditional historical-cultural interpretation that I want to question with this image and by which I want to show why Judas is a mirror for us.
